Yesterday we played a testimony of one of the members of our body. I didn’t have anything to do with the shooting / interviewing / editing process. After the service I asked permission to share his story on this website. I was very touched by John’s story and want to share it with you. The voice and music tracks are panned hard left and right because that’s how we play back in the worship service. We do that so we have mix control between the two channels at FOH. I just haven’t taken the time to re-export a mixed version.
done
Note:
We used to always show testimonies on video. We don’t always do that now. We try to evaluate what format will best facilitate the telling of a story. Sometimes our pastor will interview someone live on stage. Personally, I am a fan of videotaping testimonies because what you get is “The Best Of” of a person’s story.

Why don’t you mix it beforehand? For my situation, I’d rather have the stereo image in the music bed. When I’m about to mix something I’m not sure about, I dump the project over to my laptop (running Logic Pro), and I mix it in the room it will be shown.
Anyway, my questions is not intended to be an indictment, but rather, just a question.

Hey Richard,
The simple answer is that our system is mono, and it’s just as easy to mix the two channels live. If we had a stereo PA then I’d do what you do and just mix the stereo music and vox before hand in the room. But for any other distribution (web, podcasts, etc) we export a fully mixed stereo version. But for us it’s just easier to do it this way, and it affords us a little more flexibility. For example, it’s nice to be able to feed a little of the music channel to the subs while keeping the vocals out of them.
Take care, thanks for reading. Oh – and no indictment felt here . . .

There’s a way to get 3 channels of audio out of FinalCut as well. I forget how – but if you had an LCR system you could get L/R and Center for vocal out of ProTools.
I’ve been trying to get my church’s video group to do give us L/R because quite simply… they’re mixing these things on stereo reference monitors, that are not even CLOSE to our PA.
